The umbrella term green shemistry emerged in the early 1990s within the chemical scieneces and mirrored a spectacular growth. The drivers begind this growth and the scientifics character of green chemistry has been has been a matter of dispute since its inception. The PhD thesis Research between Science, Society and Politics: The History and Scientific Development of Green Chemistry (Maastricht University, 2023) aims to clarify that dispute and presents a historical analysis of the birth and evolution of green chemistry, with a special focus on the USA, the UK and hte Netherlands and the chemical societies in these countries. In this lecture I will discuss that birth and evolution, also with respect to the well-estabilished subfield environmental chemistry.
